Spock is often quoted as saying "In an insane society, the sane man must appear insane." I don't recall the scene, and though there are many references to it on the Web, none of them offer an episode reference. Is it apocryphal? Did the scriptwriters of the movie Serial make it up? If not, please indicate in which episode it appeared...bonus points for context. Many, many thanks in advance!

After a little digging we have found what we think you are looking for. It is in the Mirror, Mirror episode. The quote has to do with it is easier for a logical man to appear to be a barbarian then for a barbarian to appear to be a civilized.
Mirror, Mirror is when Kirk, Scotty & Uhura are transported to an alternative universe which is barbaric. And advancement is by killing people in your way.
Find it at following web site

Hope this helps.

the quote you used "in an insane society..." actually comes from the movie Serial (1980). Stokely says it to Harvey and claims it came from Star Trek.
