i just bought a 2002 passat, 1.8 litter turbo. i was driving it and all the sudden the check engine light came on, i checked the air filter, and it was filthy, i changed it and reset the thing so the check engine light would go off, about 6 hours later, i drove it with the engine light off, and as i sped up reving the engine to about 4000 rpms, it did fine, but when i got into town and did the same thing, the check engine light popped back on, i made sure the gas cap is tight, the car seems to be running fine, any ideas?

there must be a hard code set in the computer. Go to autozone or pep boys or advanced auto, they will pull the codes for free. then you'll know what the problem is. good luck

Take it to a dealer or qualified mechanic and have the code(s) read from the computer. There are literally hundreds of things that can cause the light to turn on. A mechanic will read the codes and use that information to troubleshoot the problem and identify the root cause. The codes tell a qualified mechanic where to start looking, not what parts to change.
