This depends, but the basic principle is the same... Make your yard uninviting to birds.

Try branches or items that have become roosts. Stop feeding them if you do. If those don't work try scaring them off, put up an owl or crow decoy, play a tape recording of predators, get a pet, or hang a wind chime.

As a last resort you could put little birdie diapers on all of them.

There are three methods with which you could deal with this problem.
First, take up your lawn and replace with paving stones.
Second, place a statue, preferably a lion, in a non grassed corner of your garden
Finally, feed all the worms and insects in your close vicinity a drug like Gastrostop. That way when the birds eat them, they will become constipated.

What kind of birds?
If they're Canadian geese, then take away their reason for being near your yard, or make it unpleasant for them to stay. Get rid of food sources, open water, etc. Get a big dog. Check out your local municipality's laws for removing nuisance birds. You may be able to shoot or poison them.

If it's pigeons, then do what shopping malls and blueberry farmers do; set up plastic owls, tie a few shiny thin mylar streamers to tree branches, play hawk calls on a speaker every few minutes.

I found that most birds like to be wined and dined.........This does seem to prevent quite a lot of crap but can still lead to other inconveniences.
