when your chain, moves more than an inch and a half, or so, when you reach down ( or have someone move it when you are sitting on it) up and down. first, put the bike on the centerstand, so the rear wheel can spin freely. tighten the chain by loosenining the chain tensioner nuts that are attached to the rear axle. and loosening the rear axle nut a bit, so it can move backwards as you tighten the chain. after you have loosened the tensioner nuts, turn the tensioner bolts clockwise the same number of turns each, until the chain will only move up and down about an inch or so., not super tight, or it will wear everything out too soon, and you will put undo stress on the motor. when it is tightened to your satisfaction, ( the wheel should turn fairly freely, with out the chain binding or dragging the wheel down) tighten the nuts on the tesioners again (there is sometimes two nuts on these so they wont break free) and dont forget the axle nut or you will just loose your adjustment and have to do it again. ride around a little to see how it feels before you go out for a longer ride, with more experience you will be able to tell just by how the chain sounds and feels when you are riding, when it needs adjustment. it gets kind of floppy, so dont let it get too loose or it can come off, and this can be bad. your rear tire may lock up on you and/or break the case.

You can always take it to the Honda dealer for regular service.
To check it, just see if it has more than 1/2 to 1 inch of slack in it, if more then 1 inch, then it will need to be tightend. You will need a motorcycle jack to raise the back tire, unless you have one, I say just take it to a shop if it needs it.

1st loosen up the axle
2nd notice the two bolts on each side of the axle? tighten those up an equal amout of turns.
3rd you will want a little bit of slack because of the swingarm movement.
4th tighten the axle back up.
