The SOLE purpose of the VSS is to inform the computer of the vehicle speed so that the PCM can adjust the fuel, spark and other operational parameters for optimum performance and emissions.
If it fails, it will trigger a "Check Engine" light, but nothing more as far as the car's behavior.
Good Luck

why did you ask this question?
is your speedo working?
is your tranny not going into gear?
EDIT:
if your tranny isnt going into gear, there are several things to consider. the fact that you mentioned something about the speed sensor is the only reason for the next statement. *if the sensor were to "fall out" or break physically in any way, there is a high chance that all of your tranny fluid could have leaked out. this would cause the speedo not to work, and your tranny to lock down eventually.*
otherwise, the sincros* could be going out. the clutch, if old, could be causing it not to go into gear. it goes on and on

If your VSS fails, your transmission will still engage into gear, however it may not shift through the ranges because the computer is seeing no speed, it will not upshift the transmission.
