When a quantity increases corresponding with another quantity it is said to be in direct proportion.
When a quantity increases corresponding with the decrease in another quantity it is said to be in in-direct or inverse proportion.

Say Pressure(P) that increases wih the Force (F) you apply are in direct proportion,
But at the same time if you keep Force constant, and decerase the Area (A) of contact of the Force, the Pressure (P) still increases. Here Area is in in-direct proportion with Pressure (P).

To denote direct proportion you write:

P F

To denote inverse proportion:

P 1 / F

Direct proportion: 1 : 1
Increase 1 to 2 ; 1 also becomes 2 (movement in tandem)

Inverse proportion: 1 : 1
Increase 1 to 2; 1 drops to 0.0 (movement in opposite directions)

Let there be two variables x, y. For some value of x there is a corresponding value of y.
This is a simple defination.

Direct proportion y / x = constant.

Inverse proportion y * x = constant.

Direct proportional means any physical quantity directly depends on another .
Eg: area of a rectangle is directly depends on length and breath.
Area of rectangle α length ,breath.


Inversely proportional means any physical quantity indirectly depends on another .
