It is not simply about reading books on psychology, but what I mean is studying it as a subject.
As you study psychology, you learn about yourself too but on the flip side of the coin, sometimes you can get too paranoid about yourself. With that, I would not agree that psychology and psychology alone can help to understand oneself.

Well.....basically understanding oneself or others around us is a typical human process....and it is absolutely not necessary that you should or must be a student studying Psychology. Our scriptures have been teaching us since thousand years that concentrating on reading and analyzing the humanity is the main stream of understanding oneself. Lord Krishna, Sri Aurbindo or Swami Vivekanand were not students of psychology; but still they are very well known everywhere for their magical strength in understanding oneself and others as well. I examined other answers to this question, and while going alongwith some of them that one should study psychology for this purpose; it should not be a kind of compulsion to understand oneself. Best Luck.

This subject is of no use whatsoever. This from someone who studied it to find out more about people and how to help.
I found nothing in it that was useful or workable or proved to be actual applicable knowledge.
It is a psuedo science. The word itself has been redefined in the last 100 years anyway. The word actually comes from the PSYCHE , Greek word meaning "soul or spirit", and OLOGY meaning "study of".
In the last 100 years it has been changed to mean the study of
rats and frogs. That man is basically an animal no different from a rat or frog. Wundt, Pavlov etc...
Even Freud was a cocaine addict with a fixation on sex as the only cause of human aberration.
As for an understanding of the mind...... forget it.
Left brain ,right brain, behavioral, environmental....... it's all theoretical, none of it gets results.
What real life problems has this pseudo science helped mankind with?
The prisons get fuller, the violence and wars continue, drug use
both legal and illegal continues to soar, divorce rates increase,
illiteracy, poverty.
No, psychology does not help us understand ourselves or eachother. I see evidence of the opposite, but there's too much money in it now, govt appropriations etc.. for anyone to admit it.

The main important thing that helps understand others if by observing them. This would also help understand oneself to an extent. Also try to read books that help you understand human behaviour. Then analyse your self and your behaviour.
Psychology helps you understand human behavour. But dont treat it as a curriculum. Read books like a novel, and understand and analyse

Psychology can be a reasonable approach to a subjective analysis of the ego & id, but it is hardly objective in the true Philosophic sense! It is one thing to try and understand the social perception of what you have been but much better to seek true wisdom in understanding what you can become!

Psychology is an incomplete process of naming concepts and patterns related to human behavior. It is useful inasmuch as you respect the fact that it is incomplete and very often inaccurate. Other things that might be useful in understanding oneself are meditation (as with yoga), religion (take your pick), and anything from pop culture (Survivor, Jackass, etc.). You've got your whole life to figure yourself out, and in the end, you might be wrong. Enjoy the journey!

I easily have very blended thoughts approximately this. I easily have considered scientific experts do lots harm to human beings and families that i could be very nervous in seeing one myself. on the different hand i'd desire to declare a similar component approximately pastors and priests. for sure there are no suited psycologist, psychiatrists, pastors, or priests and so there is skill for all to do harm. The tipping component is detect of medicine, pastors and priests can't try this and maximum phycologists on my own can't the two, thank goodness. yet would desire to psychology yield to recommending psychopharmocology scientific care, then only out of my own studies i might reject this, I easily have considered human beings bypass down this slippery slope and in no way recuperate. I haven't any own relationships have been this has shown to be a powerful project, lots of failure nevertheless. i'm not exaggerating as quickly as I say I easily have countless human beings in my existence who heavily resemble the Soma addicts of Huxley's brave New international.

Psychology asks you questions about your self, your past, your feelings, and your future plans. Yes, it helps. What else is there to help you?

Psychology helps you to understand why you do what you do, what you are likely to do if certain events happen to you, and explains why other people do what they do.
