If they are at your house, you tell them to either stop disrespecting your home or leave.
If you are at their house, grab your spouse, kids and purse and silently walk out the door. Go home and give your own family a real fun Christmas.
Either way, you do not have to tolerate it. And if you choose to tolerate it, then just accept yourself.

This always happens and reminds me of the saying that you can choose your friends but not your relatives. If I have to see relatives then it is not on Christmas day - I need one day of peace. The relatives can amuse themselves some other way and if I can totally avoid them over the Christmas period I do so. Many times I wish that I never had relatives at all.

Guess what I was wondering that my self i have a long I mean long standing invite (since last christmas ) to visit my family on fathers side and that is worst than a chicken coup when all hens are locked up and they will up north in Staten sland N.Y. and I have to take the feery to get there so I would be stuck if I go so i am kinda doubting it. Rather stay home in the beach.

Drink more eggnog and Jack Daniels Black Label.

When I would have to work Christmas while in Police Dept. ... I would get so many "Family Disturbance" calls. When I would get there everyone was fighting, the Christmas tree laying in the front Yard, Someone would have to go to the hospital, most of them drunk, fighting over presents they didn't like.

A pure nightmare, ..........

You're not alone. In fact it is a family tradition in many families.

Try to avoid that set of people if possible. No one wants downer types at any event. Make an excuse. They probably feel they are normal. Maybe they haven't seen each other in a long time and there are issues they have been dying to get off their chest. So then at the holiday they explode. Not fair at all. If you cannot avoid them. Make them promise to be "different" this year...Good luck:)

Sounds like MY family! The best thing to do is stand up and say "It's Christmas and we're family. If we can't have an enjoyable, peaceful day together then I would rather be alone (or with your own family ie wife and kids)" Then leave.

I dont know why holidays can bring out the worst in some family members...........we like to play games and keep things fun, try playing Texas Holdem and games, bingo and other games with everyone bringing an elephant gift for a prize.....that way they don't have time to think of yesteryear

Change the subject by lighting the Christmas Tree on fire. It works everytime.

Get a big bull horn and hide it behind the couch. Soon as those relatives start-up, bring out that bull horn and shout "Bah Humbug". keep doing it until they stop.
