Try it comparing our perception to other cultures. For example, there are some places where pain in inflicted in order to prepare somebody for life, and to gain strength. Americans do not generally inflict pain voluntarily, but somebody that is in pain is showed as strong for being able to endure and survive it.
For example, if somebody becomes very ill, but then has a full recovery, a certain culture may view that person as weak, since they ever became ill to begin with. Americans, on the other hand, glorify the process, and beleive it takes strength to overcome an illness.
