They are full of air. More air inside them then there is weight to sink them. Ship gets a hole in it air goes out water comes in and then it sinks.

it is the bouyancy which helps a big cruise ship float.
the bouyancy is the upward force which all liquid tend to apply on substance immersed in it.
The archimedes law of bouyancy is as follows:

An object which is partially or fully immersed in a liquid will float if it displaces same amount of liquid as it's weight.

i hope you know the law of flotation that states that anything that displaces water equal to its own weight will float. the ship is able to do this. hence it floats.
