I was at a home center looking around and they had windows on display and what I thought I used to know was a double hung window I guess isn't. They had double hung windows and single hung windows side by side and I couldn't tell they were different looking at them. I thought maybe the "double" meant double pane glass, but the single hung windows had this as well. They both retracted up and down and functioned about the same. Gees, can some please explain????

I believe that JEPA gave the best answ.
A single hung window is one that only the lower portion of the window moves up and down, the upper portion is stationary.
A double hung window is a window that the lower portion of the window moves up and down and the upper portion moves up and down also.
The confuseing thing is they (both windows) look the same when standing side by side. A single hung window is cheeper than a double hung window. But most windows today Hinge so that the window can be cleaned from the inside of the house, so a double hung window can be cleaned entirely from the inside of the house. But a single hung window you can only clean the lower portion of the window the upper portion you would have to go outside to clean it. With a double hung window you can move both the top portion down and the bottom portion up for better ventaltion. Hope this helps.

Double Hung Window = Having 2 sashes that slide up and down.
Single Hung window = One sash is movable and the other fixed.
This is the earlier form of sliding sash window.

A single hung is one where only the bottom sash would open. A double hung is one that not only does the bottom opens, the top will also open, sliding down instead of up like the bottom. They also usually have a full screen. Hope that answers your question.

A single-hung window has a single sash (frame and glass) which slides up and down in its tracks, and a non-moving sash. Typically, the fixed sash is the upper window frame.

A double-hung window has two sashes which slide past each other in their own tracks.
