It is crazy to hear the Republicans say things about the Democrats and the Democrats turn around and say the same thing about Republicans... why is that? If we all held the same standards for all politicians, wouldn't we be less divided? I know there are certain issues that the parties differ on, pro-life/pro-choice, less taxes/more taxes. etc... but does anyone see what I mean? In this political forum **** is talked back and forth and it just is a little nuts.... "funny in a certain light how we all look the same"

the reason i asked this question is because someone just asked why liberals were okay with liars, cheaters, sluts... etc. and then someone answered him that a republican just resigned for being gay or a pedophile or SOMETHING, and my point was to those people... THERE ARE BAD PEOPLE IN EVERY SPECTUM OF LIFE!!!

What we have is an ultimately f--ked-up two-party system. On one side, there's the Republicans who rely on lies, deception, fraud, and mobilization of supporters in order to stay in power. On the other side is an unorganized, disunified, and pathetically misdirected bunch of nimwits running the Democratic party. They are both bought and paid for by international corporations and the rich who have no allegiance to no one or no country!

And an underinformed dumbed-down American-Idol-watching electoral base to keep these two in power.

Because politics is essentially an adversarial process. It isn't just Republicans and Democrats. It's been the nature of politics throughout human history. Politics will never operate on a consensus basis. Nor should it. Real world issues are not black and white, and vigorous public debate is essential to a healthy political process.

You have people in power, and people who want to be in power. Some are in it for themselves, and some because they genuinely want to change the world. Since it is very hard for people to win public office on their own, they tend to band together with people of like mind and pool their resources. That's how political parties come into being. And it is in their interests to paint their opponents in the worst light possible.

The question is, should there be political rules of engagement, or should it remain no holds barred? Politics would be less demeaning if opponents behaved more like "gentlemen".

It is also pertinent to ask why have the ideological divisions become so bitter in America. This has become glaringly obvious to me in my short time on Yahoo Answers, if it wasn't before.

I'm still not sure why in my own mind. But my hypothesis is that a lot of Americans are feeling isolated, powerless and confused about where their country and their own lives are headed. In that state of mind people tend to look for someone to blame. And when Fox News and commentators like Rush Limbaugh make it all look so black and white, people home in on the targets they hold up for blame. And their targets go on the defensive and try to fight back.

I think it is a very unhealthy situation and destabilizing for democracy. We need active and informed debate, not just abuse and name calling.

Because both parties are pawns in a bigger power game.

Liberals get their time in office and take away certain freedoms, while Republicans use their time to take away other freedoms.
We have more laws than ever before, can say less about the government, can keep and bear fewer types of arms, are entitled to less due process, and pay more taxes than ever before...and those are just some examples.

Whoever it is that's trying to get power knows how to play people in order to get it. We've given the gov't more power than ever because Liberals and Conservatives take more and more power in their relative domains every time they enter office!

Those issues of abortion and taxes are alot larger than you portray them. It has more to do with the entire scope of human rights and ethics, and the issue of social programs versus paying your own way.
