It examines incoming and outgoing traffic and figures out which of the packets or data is not meant for your computer. Hardware and Software firewalls keep you from getting viruses and they stop hackers. Firewalls are essential in keeping your computer secure. Most Software and hardware firewalls cost money but Zonealarm is a good FREE software firewall. You should download it. I know this information because Im a computer techie. Edit - Firewalls are used by comsumers, companies and pretty much everyone. They are used on computers with internet access. They use it to protect data. Consumers use it to prevent identity theft, their personal information being stolen, and just for their own good. I just use the Windows Firewall. A Firewall is good to keep hackers and even viruses. Mainly intruders, it blocks ports and applications from accessing the internet.

I use SyGate PFW. Firewal software programs block malware and even some legitamite programs from accessing the internet or reaching your computer without your premission from the outside. A Router is also a good way to block intruder from entering your LAN and infectiong your computer(s).
There are several good freeware firewall programs. In my opinion there are as vitial as an antivirus program. As a matter of fact if effective a firewall can stop malware from reaching the internet in the event it gets passed your antivirus or antispyware programs.

Firewalls are used to protect your computer from hackers and intertnet treats, what they do is protect the open ports u use for various programs, such as internet explorer... if u open a program that uses the intertnet such as itunes it automaticly opens port on your pc to accest the net. Firewalls protects those open ports so nothing bad gets in but your programs get access out.

I use ZoneAlarm Free, but I used to use Norton IS 2006...

They're great for monitering incoming and outgoing traffic so nothing strange comes in or out that you dont want. Which means hackers will have a much harder time trying to place a trojan or hacking into your computer. Firewall it good to have to prevent attacks
