You dont need a desktop. You will need a Internet connection(any speed, get one that fits your surfing and budget)->Modem from Internet Provider(You might be able to get one that also has wireless built in- eliminating the need for the router)->Wireless router(Find out if your laptop is 802.11b or 802.11g and get the router for it). Again, thats,
ISP->Modem for ISP->Router(if there isnt one in the modem)
Go to your local comp store for help.

What you heard is completely not true. First, you'll need to have Cable or DSL Internet service. You'll then need to go to your local computer store and buy a wireless router. As long as your laptop is fairly new, it should have a wireless card built in. If not, you'll need to buy one of those also. The guys at your local computer store will be able to describe in more detail what you should do. It's a bit much to type here.

You need a device called a router, I think. Plus, you need a wireless internet service provider. Try going to Best Buy this weekend. Ask the guys in computer sales.

To go wireless you do need a wireless router , your modem would connect to the wireless router, on your laptop you need a wireless card or if you have a built in wireless called centrino in your laptop. You do not need a desktop if you dont have one. But if your unsure how to connect with wireless i suggest you conect someone you know, geek squard are awful but i'm sure they can handle a simple thing of connecting 1 computer for wireless

You will need the following:
Broadband Connection (Cable, DSL, etc.)
Wireless router (you may be able to get a wireless/modem combo from your broadband provider)
Set up these items per the manufacturers instructions and you will be ready to go!

A instantaneous modem router could be a instantaneous router/modem mixture and a instantaneous router might purely be a router by utilising itself. in case you had intense-velocity cable information superhighway you will possibly want a modem linked to a instantaneous router to get on line.
