Is there some old wives tale about acorns falling from the tree so early?

My yard is covered with acorns. I remember a few years back the same thing happened. I am sure someone told me it had something to do with the upcoming winter.

If an oak has an abundance of acorns in the fall, then the winter will be cold and wet.

does it mean a cold and wet winter i think thats what i heard..
