ITALY will have to play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in order for them to qualify for the finals as FIFA is no longer allowing the defending champions qualify automatically to the finals.
BRAZIL, the 2002 FIFA World Cup champions have played in the South American qualifiers to qualify for the 2006 finals. they finished as champions in the CONMEBOL South American group ahead of ARGENTINA on goal difference.

No, Italy doesn't automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Actually the hosts of the World Cup (South Africa in 2010), are
the only team that qualifies. Every other team must qualify for
the 2010 World Cup, including the 2006 World Cup champions
Italy. I think the automatic berth awarded to the champion in
the past was discarded at this year's World Cup I think. Brazil
had to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

No, Italy does not qualify and it has to go through the qualifications.
This is another "pearl" of the INCOMPETENT and BIASED person called Sepp Blatter. I have already express my disgust about this individual, his arrogance and his contorted vision of the game. Under his presidency, he has damaged the image of soccer like no one else have done before.
After the Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup, he decided that the World Cup winner has to go through qualification (Brasil won in 2002). In all the other World Cup edition, the winner was automatically qualified (16 editions): as explained before, he is very much biased against Brasil and Italy... and he does everithing is in his power to damage those two nations. Yet, Brasil won in 2002 and Italy in 2006. I guess he (and his pal Platini) is a big "rosicone" too.

no. they should have to prove once again that they deserve to be world champions. if they are supposedly the best team in the world, then there is no reason why they shouldn't play in the qualifying matches if they are good enough to win them. Not playing in the qualifying matches and qualifying automatically would be like taking the easy way out because they are scared they might lose...I'm not saying they would be scared, but it would give some ppl that impression. I think that they should qualify as to prove that they deserve to win the WC again...

They should but they don't! The only one who automatically qualifies is the host country. I think that is stupid! But those are the rules. Everyone goes back to zero and has to start all over again.
