I found them on west coast beaches, in sanstones in a quarry, some out of a rather shistose mica rock ledge in ontario, and quite a few of them in the black sand when panning for gold as a hobby. most of them are dark, and broken or worn, I don'y know any good sites, they are pretty common. The best samples came out of the mica shist.

The most common factors for valuing a gemstone are the purity and clarity. Purity refers to the lack of flaws in the crystal and clarity refers to how transparent it is.

Have you looked at your garnets under fluorescent lights...? I understand that some of them will look different colors depending on whether they are under sunlight or artificial light. And I have read that some very rare garnets are pruple, though I have not seen any good photos of them.

Where did you find yours, or did you buy them...? They are relatively common in New England and on the East Coast. I have some reddish-brown ones and a bunch of broken pieces. Please let me know if you know of any good hunting sites in additional details. Thanks!
