We are buying a house that has a private pond, but the property is grown up and the pond is filthy. Can I do anything to clean it up that won't hurt the fish? Is there anything I can do to help make the fish thrive?

Will adding a fountain in the middle help? If so, in what ways and to what degree?

I should have clarified earlier! The pond is big, about 1/3 acre and it's stocked with fish for fishing. Mostly it's just really muddy and doesn't look good.

I made a few 4'x4' floating decks (no you can't stand on them) and they float all over and helps the top from getting that oily looking skin from the pollen in the spring. They also gives the fish shade and protection. Be careful of snakes, alligators, whatever dangers are in that area. Oh, when I dug op the giant weeds it left holes around part of the bank and the fish used them as nests.

This will be a time consuming thing to mess with. Most people fill them in when they buy a house. But if you don't want to that, a fountain is a must in order to oxygenate the water for the fish. This should be priority # 1. You can buy algae killer that won't kill the fish, but make sure you don't over use it or it will become toxic quickly. You may have to physically get in the pond to clean a lot of it out, and you will smell awful after wards, so be prepared to shower with a water hose. You can find most every thing you need at Home Depot or Lowe's.

I think you are better removing the fish to tubs, draining the pool and giving it a good scrubbing. You don't know what may be living in there if they let it get so dirty.
A fountain aerates the water. Better for the fish but not a solution for pond scum. The fish can actually choke if the algae gets too thick.

You can definately do this yourself!
Put the fish in a temporary holding tank, or buckets, & clean away!
If you can, empty the pond to remove as much algae
& other muck as possible. A water fountain will help with areation. Make sure to provide other plant material for shade.

make constructive that each and every of the breeds of fish which you have get alongside with one yet another. do not disturb them too lots. in case you reside in a chilly climate, make constructive that the pond is deep enought that it will not freeze each and every of how (or deploy a heater). additionally upload a bubbler or a fountain for extra oxygen. sparkling the pond as quickly as a year, yet attempt to not handle or circulate the fish too lots.
