Encourage him to go after the ball. In youth soccer kids sometimes are "ball hogs." They are afraid that if they don't keep it they won't get it again or they won't get a chance to score. Also talk to the coach. This is something he could talk to the team about ( after 3 or 4 touches on the ball you pass it to another team member!). Assure him that if he keeps practicing he will get better. Best wishes to you and your son.

Tell Him If He Keeps Playing, He's Gonna Get Better. And He's Gonna Have The Ball All The Time! (and speak to his coach just in case it's a different situation....)

When I first starting playing, I felt the same way. It takes a while to get aggresive enough to play. But for his age, he should want to do it because it's fun. Take him out to see other teams play. He might enjoy it.

Practice with him and tell him that it makes you perfect, 5 years old is a very good to start playing football and if hes not down with that, tell him iv got 2 words for ya SPANK-Y

Cheer for him in the crowd, While your at it, try helping him with soccer. If you dont know how, ask somebody who does.
