Seriously though, Ad-aware by Lavasoft.
and SPybot- Search and Destroy.

I looked for years to find the cheepest and best virus/spyware remover and scanner. But I couldn't find it untile today someone at my college told me about avast.com. Don't listen to anyone else because this is the best thing I have ever gotten for my computer for free. I swear to god, go to avast.com and download avast home edition for free. It removed 22 viruses from my computer. I've only had my computer for a month. Get rid of your Mcafee and norton crap. Cause this is for free.

there are a lot of really good software out there that can stop spyware out there. I like Webroot's "Spy Sweeper", I have used it for years and I love it. I know several IT people that highly recommend it.

AdAware is the best. It's free. It's easy to download and install. It's one of the most robust programs out there, cleaning out spyware other programs miss.

Well personally I use Windows Defender to run in the background, and for secondary checks, I use Ad-Aware Personal, and ive never had an infection. Try it and see if you like it, easy to use interface as well!
