Protestants believe Jesus Christ was the messiah, and they believe in parts of the Bible (which parts they believe depends on which protestants). So they are called Christians. It is the same reason why Catholics and other non-protestant Christians (such as Orthodox) are called Christians.

I think the reason lots of small Christian groups like to call themselves Christians, rather than saying they are their own seperate religion, is that it gives them more legitimacy.

But it is weird in that the difference between some Christian groups is greater than the difference between Christians and Muslims or the difference between Christians and Jews. How big a difference has to be to make it a seperate religion seems to vary for political reasons.

Protest ant is the term given martin Luther about 600 a.d. after he published his "95 Thesis", and it stuck to his followers and to people who don't adhere to Catholicism , which is based on idolatry and many other things not approved Biblicly.

Its a branch of Christianity isn't it? Its most commonly given definition is merely "any Christian denomination which is not Roman Catholic or Orthodox Christian." As I figure it, it was a bunch of Christians who had a brief moment of enlightenment and said to themselves "OMG I can't believe I actually believed this crap!" But on their way out they collectively fell and bumped their heads.
