Sorry I'm thinking 50 in the USA. Unless u think ur being cute by saying 48 and the other 2 are not. DC is not a State.Since this is rather juvenile I regret bothering.

It now consists of 50 states and one federal district; it also has numerous overseas territories.
The number of states is represented by the numbers of white stars on our flag, which currently still number 50.
I have included two links below. One of which shows the dates the states joined the Union.
Hawaii was the last state to join on Aug. 21, 1959.

Okay, our country is based on 50 states.
But at least Kentucky and Massachusetts are commonwealths...others are stating two others are as well, so that would leave 46.
There are also 2 of the states outside the main 48.

of course you would be wrong.. there are 50 united states... but only 48 of then are "in" the united states as we think of it...
