Whether Polk or Bush is worse is not the relevant question. There is so much of this online and in the media. What is a much more important question is why so many millions of Americans voted for "the worst president ever" in 2000 and again in 2004. The answer to this question will yield some important insights into how to make the world a safer, more enlightened place.

Dukalink has it wrong.

James K. Polk was one of the most successful presidents in American history.

Having done all he wanted to do as president in one term, he didn't even run for reelection.

Polk's main goals were to settle the question of the American border with Canada and the American border with Mexico.

He negotiated a treaty with Britian that permanently settled the northern border question. He did have to compromise on the location of that border.

He fought and won a war with Mexico on the southern border. It established that the border of Texas would be the Rio Grande, which was in dispute up until then.

He negotiated the treaty that led to the USA getting California, Arizona, New Mexico and other pieces of real estate that had belonged to Mexico.

Having won the war, he brought the United States soldiers home instead of leaving them to serve as occupiers.

Why is it a question? I see several angles you might have:

successful president vs unsuccessful president

successful war leader vs, hmm, less successful war leader

strong policies toward the Mexican border question vs more conciliatory policies

What did I miss?
