I have an 87 Mercedes bens type SDL personaly I would go on a road trip in it. Its very roomy.

One that gives you the best buttock-fit. Important for long drives.

And has room to streeeeeatch out in.
Also, cupholders.
And a good sound system.
Functioning wipers and good tires.
1st Aid Kit.
Duct tape ,wrenches(Socket MM, and twist wrench, MM), and screwdrivers (SAE and Phillips). hint: go for the millimeters.

2 gallons of water
A tarp
sticks to prop up the tarp ( hint: carry painting roller shafts; they are adjustable)
Cell phone with GPS

Big old gas guzzling old cars. Lots of room, they are quiet, ride like a cloud and you don't mind if they get dirty or banged up.

In fact, they look better if they are a bit banged up. Shows attitude.

then take that. i'd recommend a suburban w/ some options...they get much better gas mileage on the highway.
