After a Windows update, my Dell Inspiron B-120 laptop wouldn't start. It would begin to boot up, but I would then get a blue screen that says Windows could not start successfully. I had to reinstall Windows to fix the problem. However, it deleted everything on my laptop. Music, Word documents, everything. Is there any way I can set my laptop back to how it was before the update?

If you didn't create a backup I don't think there is a way to retrieve that data.

PC INSPECTOR™ File Recovery (freeware) is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems. Here is a note from Snapfiles.com

It recovers files with the original time and date stamp, and can optionally restore them to a network drive and can recover many files, even when a header entry is no longer available. On FAT systems, the programs finds partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged. PC Inspector File Recovery offers an easy to use interface that will scan your drive and automatically make files that can be recovered available from a "Deleted" folder in an Explorer Style navigation tree.

It may be possible to find a number of undelete tools on the Internet but this is not guaranteed to work. I personally have tried some and they work all right but you can't get everything and I have never had to try it on such a scale as everything being lost, Also scanning the whole harddrive can take a very long time. It is also recommended that you avoid writing to the hard drive as it decreases the chances of this option working...

You should have tried system restore before doing that.Did you make a backup disc when from time to time to keep old settings? Other than that, all of that stuff is gone. By the way. files on a computer are never completely erased. They are just on the disc somewhere that the computer doesn't go to under nomal operation. They olny way to completely delete files is to overwrite them or format the disc.

The only possible way that I know to get your data back would be to use a third party program like File Scavenger. Even then the chances are more greater for failure. You may be able to retrieve it and it may be corrupted. I was able to recover data from a hard drive that was formatted over 5x using this utility.
