HA HA
I am from Wisconsin,..Land of the Cows,, the place is filthy with them!
No .. I can certainly say that as a whole , as a group the normal cow is NOT... I SAY NOT smarter than teh average horse... or much of anything else for that matter of fact.
Of course there are some variances with each breed but as a whole cows dont even come close in intelligence to horses...
Tell your buddy sorry...
We loves cows here in Wisconsin,..but they are not all that bright...
Moooooooo

I have both, horses are smarter, not even close. smart cows jump fences and that is bred out of them. smart horses were good things to have 100 years ago and also today.

It depends on what you mean by smart. If you mean whether cows are more intelligent than horses misses the point, because they may not have a life style that requires a great deal of brain power, ie it would be wasted. Humans for example, have higher intelligence because it was an adaptation that gave a selective advantage, however, there is a down side, brain power is energetically expensive, so not many animals go down that path. For example, higher intelligence has evolved separately in Cephalopod Mollusc's (squid, octopus and cuttlefish) and marine mammals such as Dolphins. Many animals have reduced their requirement for expensive brain power, in particular, animals that may have a low nutritional diet, for example, Koalas, that sleep 18 in order to metabolize the toxins within Eucalyptus leaves.

Well, I won't say that cows are dumb...but I don't think they're brilliant. Horses are definitely smarter. Yes, you can teach a cow to do tricks, but you can teach a horse a lot more.

Cows are 'intelligent' animals, but they can only be as smart as their lifestyle demands. Perhaps we could get cows to ride bicycles one day - ... until there is some demand in their lives FOR brainpower... they live a very... boring life.
I come from a family of dairy farmers. We have 300+ head of Holstein's. Aside from heading to the milk parlor 2x a day, the only thing they really have to do is eat and sleep.
Furthermore - horses aren't the only animals that brought us to America. Who do you think pulled the wagons? OX! Those are cows. If you can stick a bit in a cow's mouth and ask it to pull a wagon, ask it to turn corners, ask it to stop and back up... I would say it's pretty smart.
Ravin Said : If cows were as smart as horses, we wouldn't be eating them."
AND YOU DON'T THINK ANYONE IS EATING AMERICAN HORSES??? Get real. http://www.equineprotectionnetwork.com/saveamericashorses/index.html

Cows maybe the dumbest animal on the planet, at least a close second. Have you ever saw an animal die of thirst in a snow field or go hungry because the grass is to tall. I take it your friends never dealt with cows before
