The magic number represents the combination of wins by the leading team and losses by the second-place (or tied) team that would clinch the division title, or wild card spot in this case. Let me give you an example of how this concept works. Since Philadelphia is 84-76, and the Dodgers are 85-74, the number that is of concern is the Phillies 76 losses. There are 162 games in a MLB season. (162-76)=86=maximum number of games the Phillies can win this season. The Dodgers can clinch if they win
2 of their remaining 3 games, since they already have 85 wins.
If Padres lose out, then they will have 86 wins. If the Dodgers
win, they are probably going to be in. The magic number for the
Dodgers is 2.

The magic number is the combination of wins/losses for the team in first place vs. the next contenders to be eliminated...i.e if they are two games ahead with 3 left to play, one win by the leader and a loss by the next contender would eliminate the second place team

I am a lifelong Philly phan and they are pretty much toast unless a miracle of biblical proportions happens. They must sweep the Marlins and the Giants must sweep the Dodgers. Highly unlikely.
