Probably because marijuana is so easy to grow the governmet can't tax it. And if the government can't make money off of it they won't legalize it

The reason marijuana is not legal is that even though it's not a hard drug like cocaine or heroin, it is considered a "Gateway drug" as very few hardcore drug addicts start without using marijuana.
Marijuana also can impair thoughts when a person is stoned.
As a former safety and human resources professional, I can assure you there is a very valid reason for this. Statistics have shown that the majority of on the job injuries are caused by people who were impaired. Either they injure themselves or they injure other persons. The cost of on the job injuries raises the prices on consumers due to the cost of worker's compensation claims (most companies get increase in rates for 3 years following each claim).
And the person who mentioned no one gets in trouble for driving has forgotten that a person can get a citation or loss of license for driving while impaired or driving under the influence.
These are all reasons why marijuana should not be made legal.

given that one can never overdose on it, it is still a public safety issue. There are no current laws like there are for alcohol that prohibit weed smoking while driving. There are no laws that say dont operate machinary or venture outside when high.
On the other hand, alcohol and cigarettes would never be legal if introduced to the FDA right now. Just like underage drinking happens all the time, doesnt mean that it should be legal.

A very large number of people cannot even use alcohol responsibly - and the cost to society in both money and human suffering is tremendous.
It doesn't make any sense to add another log to this fire.
I personally know a lot of people who "have never gotten stoned."
I guess we just hang with a different crowd.

I have never gotten stone. I'm from the Caribbean and marijuana is NOT a big deal. USA makes it a big deal because the government wants to make money from it.

It is illegal because there are laws against using, possessing, importation, cultivation, and selling of it. It will never be legalized.
If you don't know anyone who has never used it your hanging with the wrong people.
What are the chances that a politician will ever be elected on the platform that we need more drug abuse in America?

Question: Why is marijuana illegal?
Answer: Something is illegal when laws are passed prohibiting it. Marijuana is against the law because there are specific laws which make it illegal.
To understand why certain things are illegal, we should understand two basic principles: (1) where laws come from; (2) why one thing, rather than another, may have a law against it.
Laws are rules which are enforced by a controlling authority or Government. In the United States, we have a Constitution, which is considered the highest body of law, or rules, in the land. The US Constitution creates three areas of government: 1. a President to oversee the country; 2. a Legislature to enact and create rules of law; and 3. a Court system to test and enforce the rules and laws enacted by the legislature.
Laws are usually made with the idea of protecting people or things. For instance, laws against driving too fast are safety-oriented and are intended to protect people. Laws against chopping down native cactuses are intended to protect the desert plants, rather than protecting people.
Before a law on anything is created, people must agree that a law is necessary. For some things, most people agree there is no need for a rule or law to control it. On the other hand, when enough people agree that a law is needed, then one may be created by the legislature. Legislatures are made up of representatives elected by people.
If something is determined to be dangerous, and people are doing it in spite of its dangers, then the legislature may create a law to prevent people from doing it and the court system may punish people who break the law.
So, marijuana, like most things which are illegal, has been determined to be a danger to the people, and because some people use it, sell it or possess it in spite of its dangers, laws were created by the legislature to prevent people from using, selling or possessing it and to punish people who violate the law.

Pot is illegal in my opinion because it may lead to the use of other hard drugs. It is a fact that the majority of young people who use other hard drugs, had used marijuana first. It is also a fact that the risk of using cocaine has been estimated to be 104 times greater for those who have tried pot than for those who have never tried it. Not all young people who use pot go on to use other drugs, but it is not known who will and who won't, so pot must be made illegal to protect those who will end up addicted to other drugs. We only have one life to live, so it shouldn't end up in the gutter.

It has a long term effect that can not be fixed. It will kill your brain cells. Rather you like it or not, sometimes they protect you from yourself.
