Yes...It's the best time to plant...Try to do it right after a rain.

And if you know it is going to snow(how far south are you talking about?) sow grass seed right b/4 it snows....Snow acts as a blanket, (covering instead of straw) and it keeps the birds from eating the seed..........It aids in germinating........

Of course! Now is the perfect time - just be sure that the kind of grass you plant is meant to be planted in the autumn ( there are different varieties - ask the person from whom you are buying it).

Three little hints:

1) be sure the grass you are planting is similar to the grass you already have - there are many, many different kinds of grasses, and if you are trying to fill in a patch, it could look strange if the grass is a different type!

2) if you are covering a large space you could buy sod (rolled-up strips of grass). Again, ask the person at the shop about this.

3) If you are planting from seeds (my favorite way) be sure to water your little guys EVERY DAY!! Also, scatter straw over the little seeds after you plant them. This helps!

Hope this helps,

:-)

Aerating the soil, unless it's very fertile/"loose" soil, will help tremendously also. If you try and plant in the Spring, the roots won't have time to establish before the heat of Summer and the lawn will die pretty quickly. Most people don't realize that roots of most plants grow throughout most of the winter (probably not true in Northern climates since the soil is frozen down some distance).

Yes you can. It depends alot though on what type of grass seed you are talking about. Also how south are you?
If your area is not too large it would of course be better to sod it.

depends on where you are and what type grass you want to have. here in central florida we seed with winter rye and it gives a beautiful green carpet through the winter.
