Of course it made a sound. It's just that no one heard it. I hate that question.

trees don't fall they are fell and if they are fell some one or some thing fell them, so this question is wrong and that is the point or it. You need not ask yourself impossible riddles. If a tree fell then it was either chopped down or knocked down. There aren't trees in the middle of no where. And almost everybody has heard "If a tree fell in the forrest and nobody was around to hear it, would it make a sound?"

Hi, FriendlyFairGirl,
Yes, physics has proven it... A tree has massive potential energy, and it's fall converts it into kinetic energy.... When the tree comes into contact with anything, say, the ground, that item is forced to absorb the energy of the impact, releasing heat and sound from friction and impact....

Thanks, for the question!;)
My regards!

I was going to post this question...rats...well I think it did make a sound, but there's no way to prove it either way. And really it makes no difference anyways, right? I think it did make a sound, because I have no evidence to the contrary and all the evidence I know of says that a tree does make a sound when it falls,

This question is usually taken in the wrong way by western-educated people. We expect resolutions to questions and are not normally trained to be meditative. The idea of the question is to get you to reflect on the nature of perception and it's relationship with the perceiver. It encourages reflexion. You're not supposed to give the scientific answer. The scientific answer is pointless in this case, that's not the idea behind the question.

Thought experiment ... Ala A. Einstien.
If a tree falls it sets up great vibrations all around it. duh
If there was no one to hear it ... It would still have all the properties of sound ... just no one to call it sound. Get it ?
Now, which came first ... the chicken or the egg ... another illogical question. Hope you understand.
It is simple not complicated.
Jonnie
PS I used to think about that stuff too. Thanks for the question.

Of course there is a sound. Just no one is there to hear it. If a person is deaf but yet can speak and he is alone he still makes words even though he can't hear himself and no one else there can hear. if a tree fell the birds and animals around would hear it and get out of the way,

I say no. To have a valid, there should be ears present day to %. up/interpret the waves; without that they in simple terms stay as waves and no noise is heard....i'm except for any recording devise that takes position to be in the area.

Scientifically, the tree created vibrations in the air, unless an animal's ears are able to pick up the vibrations and its brain is able to interpret it, then there was no "sound", just a vibration.

Yeah, it still makes a sound.
Heres another along the same subject lines... "if u cant see something, does that mean its not there?" Things like air bust that idea, we know air exists..
