If you want a real explanation...
"Pop Goes The Weasel" originally used the word money, not monkey, and refers to pawning. A weasel is a shoemaker's tool and to "pop" is to pawn. "That's the way the money goes... Pop goes the weasel."

"Pop goes the weasel" is not anything to do with monkeys as you know them. I believe it is something to do with hat making or something like that (tailoring perhaps) The nursery rhyme goes:
"Up and down the city road,
in and out of "The Eagle",
That's the way the money goes,
Pop, goes the weasel"
which I take to mean that the hat-maker?? is spending his money in the pub and he has to work some more (popping the weasel) to make ends meet. (I Think the weasel is an iron)
Hope that is clear!! :)
(I don't know where you got the mulberry bush bit from. I never heard that before). There's also mention of a "beetle" which is some sort of implement too.
I think St L Mum has got it right. I stand corrected. Although a monkey WAS an amount of money (as is a pony!)

The weasel turns around and "pops" the monkey in the nose. That pesky monkey is very annoying!

That's one heck of a good question! I think that by "POP" it means that the weasel popped the monkey in the jaw! Lol!

It's a sexual innuendo. Makes me sick just you mentioning it.
Bushes, weasels, popping. Do you kiss your baby with that mouth?
