I do it w/ my little cousins...

But in fact, the whole drugs/razorblades thing is really a myth... Never happened...

Well, it happened very few times, and every single time it was another member of the family who'd done it...

But I guess you can never be too careful, so I definitely recommend going thru the candy...

I look for open pieces of candy and then throw that away. Then I let the kids have some candy and the rest goes away during the night. I hide it through out the house so that I can parcel it out a little here or there so that they don't have sugar od (my girls would gladly eat a whole bag of candy if I'd let them).

A good idea to keep your kids at bay while you go through their candy is to have a "Halloween Dinner" before trick-or-treeting. This will put something in their bellies and tide them over while you search. You can do neat things like "witches brew" for the drink and spaghetti and meatballs that are "bloody guts" that night. The more you spice it up, the more they'll look forward to it and eat more.

My parents always had us throw out stuff that was partially unwrapped, or wasn't a candy we recognized. As kids, we only trick or treated from our small neighborhood and the one next to it, so we knew most of the people.

Absolutely, especially at Halloween. I go so far as to have it X-rayed at the local police station. If it is homemade it goes in the trash, if the wrapper is open or has been opened, it goes in the trash. Children are the most precious gifts we ever receive, protect them whenever, however you can.

Mine is grown now, but when she was still trick or treating yes I did. Then for a few years the local hospitals offered to Xray bags of treats. I'm sorry they have quit doing that.

My parents were Vultures! It wasn't to look for bad stuff, it was to steal my candy.
