When I was a kid, we had a old family doctor. He used to wear this shiny round metal thing on his head. He told me it was to reflect the light where he was looking so he could see things better. Probably before good lighting.

They are called "Orbinators"
The purpose for them is to draw radioactive waves from anything in the room to power their brains, this is because Aliens need radioactivity to survive on Earth.
A simple light bulb will provide a small amount of radioactivity but when you come to things like x-ray machines then you are talking high doses of radioactivity.
That's why all doctors are Aliens, apart from a nuclear power plant there is nowhere else they can get the daily amount of radio active material they need to survive.

They were reflectors. They had a hole in the middle. The reflector would swivel down over the doc's eye, and they would look through the hole. Light would bounce off the reflector, illuminating the patient's throat, or whatever the doc was looking at.
Docs do not wear stethoscopes on their heads.

They were used to reflect the light from the overhead light onto what the doctor was looking at. He'd place it over his eye, look through the hole at, for example, someone's throat, and the light would reflect into the mouth.
