time and time again, I will hear it on tv, and people I come across. Its is only black people, I have never heard a white person use this word. They say "he axed me...." instead of "asked". Its not a racist question. I am just wondering if they know that they are saying it wrong, and if it is intentional or if they just are incapable of pronouncing it correctly, and thirdly if they know how "less than intelligent" it can make them sound.

Because black people dont' want to better themselves and they want to be ghetto. Saying axe makes them look very uneducated.

Victoria, you said ,"Setting and enforcing "correct" grammar and pronounciation is just another way that people in power try to prove that they're better than everybody else. "
This opinion is not true. If you were working in a job in a high position, you would know that saying axe would reflect on your company as a speaker and you would lose business. I've only heard ghetto people say axe . it really does make you look stupid.

the word colour is spelled like that in canada and england but it is a correct spelling in different countries.

Because they don't choose to correct their grammar and pronunciation. Some people choose to say it and it's part of what they call "ebonics". Ebonics is a language that incorporates slang and pronunciation in which some people choose. In fact, here in texas some teacher want to bring that into the classroom in certain schools. It annoys me when they say "AXE" too but I can't tell someone to change how they speak.

It comes across to me as sounding ignorant because it's like "ghetto" slang. You would never hear Condi Rice say that because she is very intelligent and holds a high position in the US Government.

Ummm, Its called "Accents"

Just like a Jamaican will say "tree" instead of "Three"
how a New Yorker will say "Dwatah" instead of "Daughter"
how a southerner will say "Thurr" instead of "There"
and how someone with a spanish accent might say "Siss-ers" instead of "sizz-ors" (not the way its spelled, but thats how its pronounced)

Come on, its not rocket science..These blk people you talk to are probably from Cali, or somewhere from the country, or they're probably trying to sound more "black" to maintain that status quo..

And by the way, you are being racist..You made a generalization as if you've talked with every blk person..When in actuality you've probably talked to about 0.02% of us

but anyway, Im going to go with the other girl:
Why Do You Care?

You know what is funny; that is the correct way to say it. 400 years ago axe became ask, and if you don't believe me find an old dictionary.

Though, I doubt black people know that they are using the archaic form from Old English.

Hey it's not just a black thing, I noticed that a lot of southern people pronounce the word "ask" incorrectly!

Any linguist will tell you that there is no such thing as "correct" speech. Setting and enforcing "correct" grammar and pronounciation is just another way that people in power try to prove that they're better than everybody else.

Case is point: if black people are stupid or lazy for saying "axe", are all Americans stupid and lazy for dropping the u from "colour" and "neighbour"?

Yes, I wonder also. I am not racist either. They often say "chew" instead of "you" as well. Like in "I want chew to come home" It is annoying and dose make them sound less intelligent. BUT then I'm and Aussie and we say worse things at times, like "gunna" instead of "going to" "wanna" instead of "want to".........Guess we all have our own idiosyncrasies. Waddya think Hey!
