I totally agree with the rosemary - you can even make hedges out of it. Have you thought about a Rock garden? You can do it zen style, with a few large rocks in a sand or gravel field, or flagstone the yard with rocks added for sitting on, and planters of hardy desert plants.

I love my brother's yard. He won an award for his yard. He took a bunch of leaves in the fall and poored it all over the front. I mean a bunch. He went from neighborhood to neighborhood in search of as many as he possibly could. Then, in the spring, he xeroscaped. He never mows and only has to trim as often as it rains which is rarely. Look into xeroscaping. My favorite plant is rosemary which smells so nice and needs very little watering. Bread and butters are another plant that need very little watering and thrive on sunshine.

I saw a show on HGTV (home and garden) a few months ago where they landscaped a Texas dirt backyard. It turned out real nice. They put a little bridge over a ravine, made paths, and used rock landscaping among other things.
