Because If you show up at my door dressed up as a weirdo you better be after candy or I guarantee somebody's gonna have a bad night.

Trick or treating is an insult to the real history behind ALL HALLOWS EVE... Not halloween. Trick or treat though means either give me treats or i give you tricks which falls in to the belief that during all hallows eve people were to wear masks in order to blend in with the ghost and demons that were allowed out only during that night once a year. And there was considered pretty much two kinds of demons... the truly evil ones... or the mischeivious ones that just played tricks on people.

It's an old thing, you offered people a choice, they could give you a treat or you would play a trick on them. It's a bribe to leave them alone, basically. ;)

well you could just tell them to give you the candy and nobody gets hurt. but trick or treat sounds nicer.

because if they didn't get you treats you should teepee the house or throw eggs, so it's like a threat, or blackmail of some sort.
