Read the reviews and decide. I think the major players are Zone Alarm, Symantic, McAfee, AVG, maybe others.
Whatever you decide, any one will take you a while to get comfortable with. After you are comfortable you probably will not want to try something new and relearn everything new again.
I use McAfee, but I didlike how they make me "verify" my subscription what seems like every other day.

download...Grisoft.com and get the AVG anti virus..its free and great...also download stinger.com and download that as well....they do not contradict but compliment each other...
Do not download 2 or more anti-virus sites...not good and they will interfere with each others performance.

They all have their pros and cons, but if you want a detailed rundown of what CNet found after testing the major ones, look here: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6600_7-6379091-1.html?tag=sc.tf
It's a good place to start.

The tests for these two testing sites can help you a lot:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/
and ..
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
Is it just because it is the most popular or simply because it is free?

AVG Free Edition is by far one of the best out there. I use it and advise clients to get it also.
