Gottllieb Daimler of Germany produced the first gasoline powered "auto-cycle" or horseless carriage March 8, 1886.
Henry Ford developed mass-production of cars, but was not the inventor of the automobile. Ford made automobiles affordable to the general public.

Some of you people really need to do research before you answer. "shivangin..s" has the right answer. The only thing that Henry Ford can be credited with is the creation of the assembly line. Before that he was building cars just like everybody else. Gottlieb Daimler developed the first modern internal combustion engine powered vehicle. So even though these two people made signifigant improvements on the cars we drive, I don't think they can be credited with inventing the automobile

As you can see, what exactly constitutes "first" has no one correct answer. That said, most references site Gottlieb Daimler, in 1886, as inventing the direct replacement for the horse-drawn carriage which evolved into the modern automobile.
The auto assembly line was actually first used in the US by Ransom Olds in 1901, prior to Henry Ford making it famous. Henry Ford was the leader in popularizing the production and widespread availability of automobiles for the ordinary working family.

believe those who have said, "Daimler" although I think that some French guy actually beat them to it. It might have been a guy named "Peugeot". Does that name ring a bell? I think that the Germans just did it better. That's why everyone is giving you that answer.

This is not a proper forum for your question.
Daimler and/or Benz; the question is still up for debate.
Google is a good resource to answer your question, not here.
