Ist answer is correct. A groundhog is much bigger. Groundhogs make a much bigger hole in the ground. A gopher (around here we call em pocket gophers) makes a small mound of dirt or dirt hills to get the dirt out of his tunnels.
Then you have moles which make the tunnels just below the surface.
All of em are a pain in the rear and hard to get rid of lol.

PAY ATTENTION: I read everyone's answers and they're all a bunch of idiots. There is NO DIFFERENCE between a gopher and a groundhog. They are the SAME THING. Am I making myself clear? It's two different names for the same animal. I live in New Jersey and we have tons of them here. Some like to call them gophers and others like to call them groundhogs.

Yes, groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are larger than gophers. We have them all over the DC Metro area. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was watching one sun itself, atop a tombstone, in a Vienna, Virginia cemetery. I really get a kick out of these critters! Unfortunately, I have seen a lot of them as roadkill. Anyway, both are actually large ground squirrels.
