There is a lot of very interesting Simpson's trivia on this link:

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0096697/trivia

"Springfield is 678 miles from Mexico City and 2,653 miles away from Orlando, Florida. Entertainingly, both cannot be true." is one of the tidbits I saw...

This is also there:

"The Simpsons' home address has been mentioned several times and has not been the same:
In "Blood Feud": 94 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, USA
In "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington": 59 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, TA
In "Beyond Blunderdome": 743 Evergreen Terrace
In "Bart the Lover": 94 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, USA
In "Kamp Krusty": 430 Spalding Way, Springfield, USA
In "New Kid on the Block": 1094 Evergreen Terrace
In "Marge in Chains": 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield
In "Homer the Vigilante": 723 Evergreen Terrace
In "Bart vs. Australia": 742 Evergreen Terrace
In "Sunday, Cruddy Sunday": 742 Evergreen Terrace"

The closest thing I find to an actual state being named is this:

"Many of the people and places in the Simpsons are named after cities, streets and landmarks in Oregon, specifically Portland. There is a Springfield near Eugene, and many character names (Flanders, Lovejoy, (Sideshow Bob) Terwilliger, etc) are streets in Portland. Matt Groening grew up in Portland."

There are many, many pages that pop up when you do a search for "Simpsons trivia." I happened to choose the one listed in this posting.

My vote for the state that the Simpson's are really from is Oregon, based on the website trivia I read...

special-chemical-x is right. If you watch any Simpson's episode, where the Simpsons' address or town is mentioned, you'll note that the writers intended for the state name to be ambiguous. It is never mentioned in ANY Simpson's episode. Why? To drive people like you crazy and make everyone else laugh about it. It's like Dr. Claw's face in Inspector Gadget. It keeps the fans guessing.

My theory is that the writers never thought about which state to put it in, until later on in the show's lifespan. At which point they left it anonymous. But they wrote it in, in a particularly humorous way.

The word on the street is that it is a fictional state called North Tacoma. Groening was from Portland Oregon and a lot of the characters are based up on places in Portland. There are streets in Portland called. Terwilliger, Quimby, Flanders and Lovejoy.

They named the city Springfield so that it could be almost any state. That is part of the series' charm. Almost every state has a springfield.

I believe it was their intention never to state a specific state that it took place within.

Its in Texas because on 2 episodes before, one had the map of Texas and another episode Homer was talking about the family being in Texas. Those are my proof of evidence but I don't think that they're anywhere else other than Texas.

They deliberately never say. There's a Springfield in practically every state.
