Smog was pollution from factories. It was a problem from industrialisation in the 19th century until the Clean Air Act of 1957. It tended to hang around in winter in the low-altitude Thames basin, ie districts such as Southwark, Bermondsey, Lambeth and Vauxhall on the south side and the whole East End in the north, also the lower Lea Valley. It resulted in geographical division along social class lines, with the middle classes migrating to higher ground areas like Dulwich in the S and Hampstead in the N. Because the prevailing wind is SW, areas to the SW of the factories such as Richmond, Twickenham and Barnes were less affected by smog and remained middle-class.
