OK, I know I should've been wearing shoes #1.

So beyond that fact, I pulled the stem from my foot and apparently there is a piece still embedded under the really thick skin. Now it's sore, red, and swollen. How do I remove the tiny piece still in my foot or will it come out on it's own?

Things don't usually work their way out on their own...If you're absolutely set against seeing your doctor (you could get a terrible infection) I'd try soaking my foot in a tub of warm water and epsom salts..this may soften the skin enough for you to dislodge the thorn..if not it'll at least disinfect the area.
