They show, in a single shot, Carl Anderson let go of the branch from where he had tied the rope, and hang himself, and dangle there for a few moments. This was before computers and everything, so I was curious how this was possible.

They used harnesses, just as they do in live performances of the show.

Trivia: There have been at least 2 actors who have accidentally hung themselves during a performance of JCS when the stunt went wrong. One forgot to secure his harness. I can't remember what happened to the other.

If you position the rope in a certian way you can hang without any ill effects.

But it was probably a dummy.

If I could find my VHS player I'd review it and tell you for sure :/

He would have had a harness on. Of course they could do special effects back then. What about the Exorcist?
