Will I be safe in Manila?

I am a white male American traveling to Tondo, Manila. Will I be killed there?

Several suggestions:

Please dress casually, no clothing with large imported labels, no boots- too warm and too flashy .

Wear a cheap watch, do not flash your wallet especially if it has foreign currency or thousands of pesos.

Carry small denominations: P20, P50, P100.

Distribute your money: different pockets, as there might be pickpockets in the area.

Go with a local, others will usually leave you alone if you are with someone that is familiar with the place.

Act low-key, so that attention won't be on you.

Bring handkerchiefs, the weather will be humid.

Go there and leave during daytime.

Smile! The locals are friendly.

hmm . you have to take care there , you should think before you go there. A tondo is also a circular painting or relief carving.

Tondo is a poor area of Manila, you will be ok if you remove all your jewellery and dont wave your money about, lots skilful thieves are in Tondo. The rest Manila is safe if you are sensible

Yes, of course it's safe :) there is no country in the world that you can say safe. It only depends on what area you're going.

If you'll be going to Tondo, well, from what I think of the area, it's a slum area. So, I don't recommend you going there. Try the beaches of the Philippines, Boracay and Palawan. You can also go to Cebu, Bohol and Ilocos. Or you can stay here in Manila, specifically Makati, Ortigas, Libis, The Fort. Try also shopping, because I think you'll like the prices here.

no. but tondo, manila is not the ideal setting for foreigners visiting manila..it's better to have a companion who knows his/her way through tondo. people will not kill you but they may take advantage that you are a caucasian and an american. it's a depressed area and people might pressure you in helping them out monetary wise. filipinos are basically kind and helpful people. they would not gang up on you just because you're an american. just stay alert especially with those pick-pockets in tondo, and keep your belongings with you (keep and eye on them especially your wallet, passports, etc.)

Make sure when you are in Tondo at night that you are with someone. It is not a very safe situation(druggies, muggers, pickpockets) for a newbie farang to be out wondering the streets alone. If this is your first trip to phil. then I would reconsider the Tondo visit unless it is in broad daylight.

just a bit of reaction on what { cutie } try to say about the place of Tondo....this are my words for u?????have u tried to live in Tondo....how dare u to say that Tondo is the notorious and poorest,most undevelop district n slums area...hello i think u don't know that place and so u don't have the right to tell those words....I think ur 100 years old cause as the way u define the place of Tondo is way back then,for your information the place of tondo is not slums ok.......its notorious yeah maybe on other parts but don't put in on all places....i think a person can be safe on a crowded place where the people know how to help one another,not unlike in such subdivisions or village were eventhough someone/or some family was being massacre nobody care to help cause ur not minding your neighboors....and for your information there are thousands of people who are rich n famous now,than you who was born,raised ans till want to live in tondo......n ur not one of them,,,,yeah Joseph Estrada and Manny Villar and many other prominent people.see the Tondo people what about in your place is there any person in your place who ahd been president of the Philippines.....Just a piece of advice don't answer questions when you don't have knowledge about it.....you don't have the right to say those words on Tondo....for the one who post the question...so sorry but pls. post this for her knowledge n guidance......as for your question.....whats your real reasons for asking about this place......There is no such place like this cutie said,maybe she's a rich girl living in a subdivison where most massacre and robbery take palce cause they don't have concerns on their neighboors and that's the one thing Tondo have concern on others......Which place exactly in Tondo you want to go,cause tondo is such a big place.

i have been in tondo before , not one of the better parts of manila but as far as being safe you would have to provide more information. if you are going to be visiting someone in tondo and go around with that person you should be fine. i have never felt threatened anywhere in the phills. just dress casual and try not to wear expensive jewerly and no not flash a bunch of cash around. philipinos are very friendly people but they are also very poor and desperate people do desperate things. as long as you use street smarts and dont go wondering around by yourself at 2am while your drunk you should have no problems. chinatown and divisioria are close by and you can buy alot of stuff very cheap there but i always tried to have my shopping finished before dark as in that area its not safe for a forgienors to wondering around with money.

nobody will kill! just be smart going to tondo and never walk around alone specially at nite! don't wear to much expensive accessories or jewelry! but if you can meet the person outside tondo area much better!
