sure it did and the way it did is interesting. Videos can be very expensive to make and while the band does have to eventually pay that all back, the record companies have to lay out the initial up front cash. The result is that record companies couldn't afford to take expensive chances on unknown bands or singers. So they created a safe formula that worked and they stayed with it and perfected it. Now it's1962 BTB all over again and producers once again control the industry. All the chick singers sound alike all the rock singers sound alike and all the black guys sound alike. This is formula music from hell. And as always people will sell their soul to the company who are waiting there to sell plastic ware
But your right a lot of great people wouldn't have made it

I was oing to ask this same question the other day. I really think that mtv hurt GREAT music... the bands that you mentioned your are right about them. I also think that bands that formed after mtv came about some where great and then went really bad by having to have cheesy videos and more and more make up, the stupid pouty looks .. I could go on and on. I think that a lot of bands got watered down so much. I watch VH1 where are they now or catch an interview sometimes with a member of bands that I liked in the late 80's or early 90"s and look at them and see such difference in them in they way that they look now.. and not just age.... without all the things like the clothes, the hair, fire and glory behind the video's.
I really can't remember when the last time a really good band came on the radio.. I really only listen to the classic rock station where I live that plays CLASSIS rock and not this new stuff that all sounds the same... and I am not listening that, then I still have my cd's and some old cassettes of music and singer when they did it for the love of music and FELT the music they wrote and sang,,, now it is just for a quick dollar, 15 mins of fame and what do we get nothing but some bad vocals, with no range, so melody nothing that anyone puts their heart into.
I keep hoping for the day it will change, I know tv will always play a hug part in music, but I am just hoping that one day somehow tv will make room for real music and not the crap that is out there now,

YES I AGREE WITH THAT COMPLETELY!!!! I have seen all of the bands that you mentioned in your question at least once and your music taste is impeckible and i love that you like them all too, and even though they aren't the best looking people in the world, they are musical geniuses. I think that robert plant is sexy myself, but then again i am a girl who likes funky guys. but the world today is so wrapped up in image and perfection, even though thay are both impossible to achieve, that people don't realize what is actually worth while. it doesn't matter where the fantastic rock n' roll comes from as long as it makes you feel good and makes you mosh and headbang it's all good, right? MTV is a is the shittiest station ever because they can make people think that the crap on that station is actual art. but it's not. i mean, what if Elvis was ugly, would his music have been as popular? today there is really no rock even left on MTV at all . this desaterous image problem started a long time ago, but MTV has successfully mad it impossible for a real person to be creative. i applaud you for asking this question and that's all i have to say about that.

It's not that MTV killed or destroyed rock, it's that there IS almost NO rock left on MTV.
When I was a teenager, MTV just started. As a matter of fact, I remember the very first video ever. MTV was an amazing new medium for music junkies like me. Back then, MTV was ALL about rock.
Today, when I turn on MTV, which is rarely, I barely know what I am watching. It's a foreign language to me.
You could argue that MTV has just acclimated to the current music environment, but to me they have just sold out.
The only time I watch it is to see a new episode of Jackass.
Destroyed rock? No... just turned it's back on it.

mtv doesnt deserve to have the M in its name. they dont play music... and if they ever do, its for a pitiful 5 minutes, and it isnt all around music, its just rap. Music Television is hardly a fitting name for a station that has nothing to do with music now... MTV killed rock music... yes

They might have made it, but would probably be given the same treatment as someof the new rock bands out there...
But nope... MTV catered to the populace who was watching at the time..and that's why it's rap IMO except at 3am or headbangers ball once a week...
Now the people watching want to see reality TV instead of the videos and boom... we have ozzy saying f*** it on cable TV
Besides Rock lovers IMO rather see the band than see a video (unless you are talking about Amy Lee in "call me when your sober"............................................................................whew on to other things :)

I agree. Now it's all about attractive people who look like models and haven't got an ounce of talent.
The bands and artists of yesterday were best, even if they were ugly; MTV is a joke.
