Previously I asked what you considered the scariest movie as a kid. That question is still open for answering as well and can be found at this link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkXZGoQfeofXpcFgCoCjRoAezKIX?qid=20060929151112AAkQZPT&cp=1&tp=2#all-answers

But as of today, what do you feel is the scariest movie of all time and what makes it so scary?

I was taken at the age of 5 or 6 to see "The Phantom of the Opera" There is a scene where the woman is sitting in front of her dressing table mirror and she sees the murderer behind her with dagger raised ready to plunge it into her. I don't know if he did because I was too terrified to see what happened after that. Pretty stupid thing to do to take a child to a movie like that.(But adults ARE pretty insensitive when it comes to doing the right thing by children).
We all see this sort of violence (and worse) so much as adults, that WE think nothing of it, but imagine a little child seeing an actual murder. (That's what these films are like for the child.) Considering what we get on TV all the time, there are going to be a lot more children growing up to commit these crimes. The ones who come from kind and nurturing backgrounds probably won't, but most people are not from those sorts of kindly backgrounds. It's very worrying.

No movie is to scary for me.
The House of Wax was dumb but had Chad Michael in it which was the only reason I didn't fall asleep watching it.
White Noise didn't have a purpose but caught me of guard a couple of times.
When a Stranger Calls was stupider than stupid.
I don't know?

the shining(kubrick version), because the visual "items" in the film, woulndt be scary in everyday life, but they are in the film, which is the sign of a true master director, e.g., the twin girls, the beautiful naked woman, the bartender, jack nicolson is so psychotic, in a believable way.

also, you want him to go berzerk, but you also don't want him to hurt the wife or child, so thats another point too, the film doesnt really cater to what the audience wants, so it takes on a life of it's own.

'They' scared the living crap out of me. Of course, that was a few years ago and I'm sure it's nothing compared to movies I haven't seen, like "It" or "The Excorcist". The only movie in recent memory that made me jumpy at night was Stephen King's "Silver Bullet". Call me a wimp if you must, but I'm just not a huge fan of horror movies.
