It sounds like a way of saying 'being kind, considerate, compassionate, caring and/or helpful'. Generally regarded by people of all religions and none as virtuous. Always productive of benefits for both the giver and the receiver when done genuinely, without ego.
NB though, there are people who have low self-esteem and "put others first" while neglecting themselves to such an extent that they fall prey to psychological problems and/or physical diseases, because in reality they still have many ego-desires but suppress them.

That it should be done every day !!
NOT just over the the holidays when people seem to feel special towards themselves when they do a good deed. What about the rest of the year ? Geeeeeeez I hate those people who say, "there, I did my good deed for the year". How very shallow and selfish of them !
