Well, I wish I knew if you meant what would have happened if the French conquered British North America, as compared to waht if the French had kept their possessions on the North American mainland.

I'm going to assume the second.

1. The American Revolution would have been delayed for many decades. If the French and their Native American allies had been right on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains, poising a continual threat to the 13 Colonies, the Colonies would never wanted to kick out the British army and British navy. While the resentment over the British intrusion into their daily lives would have been strong, Americans would have put up with it a long time longer.

2. Slavery in North American mainland would have been abolished sooner. The French abolished slavery during the French revolution; Napoleon reestablished it. The French abolished it a second time in the 1830s, the same time the British abolished it. So there is a strongh chance that slavery would have been abolished earlier.

3. Certain different laws--both France and Spain followed Roman law, not common law.

4. There probably would have been conflict between Spain and France in what is now the United States.

5. Nontheless, since the French did not encourage much settlement from France, Anglo-Americans would have probably move into the mid-West anyway, the same way they moved into Texas when it belonged to Mexico. So Anglo-American culture might have spread itself through North America anyway.

6. And maybe it wouldn't have matter so much. France, Spain. and the Netherlands used the American Revolution as a chance for a rematch. The British victory in the Seven years war was so overwhelming that other Europeans nations had to insist on a rematch. So possibly the British would have entered into the next war against France and overturned the result of the war the way that France overturned the result of the Seven Years War as it happened.

7. Much better food in North America.

I have heard that America missed being a French speaking nation by one vote in Congress back in the 1700's. Pretty Cool.

Bon Voyage.
