It randomly decides that I am only allowed to move it up and down, not side to side. It keeps getting stuck that way. After 1-3 minutes it works again. Actually it's worse when I just opened a new page in my browser -- makes things as slow or slower than when I had dial-up! It is driving me crazy! What's wrong?

I've:
shutdown and restarted
ran an anti-virus beyond what's normally installed
updated the mouse software
Uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse
Cleaned up the hard drive thinking I might be using all the computer resources
Pulled some programs out of my startup queue
Checked the task window to see what's running in the background and it says I have loads of free ram.

I'm not a computer wizard, so I need to know in plain English --- What's wrong??!!?!?!!

Oh, thanks, but I already cleaned it about 5 times. Forgot to mention that. I dunno, maybe I missed a big goober or something but the problem seems to happen when I open a program or boot up or do something that makes the computer -- minimally -- busy.

But the keyboard works even when the mouse is stuck like that. I can get the keyboard to open other windows and move around even when the computer is thinking about something.

Time to bury that little mouse. Get a new one. But, Hey, look at all the great computer clean-up you did and all you learned. That little mouse did a good job.

Is it a USB mouse? If so, try plugging it into a different USB port (completely shut down the computer before doing this). If that doesn't solve the problem, something inside the mouse itself might be worn out. In that case, you should buy a new one. You can get a nice one for $20-30. Or you can spend a little more and get a really nice one.

Do you have a ball inside your mouse (risking the 10 points thast you do)? You not only have to clean the ball, but all three rollers, you have to scrape the junk off of all the rollers. And for God's sake stop eating at the computer!

Give it a little cheese and it will be fine! Kidding! I had one do that and ever since I replaced it with a laser mouse I havent had a problem! They r cheap enough thank god! I paid $50 for mine and it works awesome! You could try cleaning it and using a new mouse pad- sometimes they act a little wild when they r dirty!

Had the same problem once, take the mouse apart itself. Maybe you have a lose wheel. I actually broke the wheel once and only could figure it out once I took it apart.

Now if its a new mouse with the red eye I have no idea.

you should try reinstalling windows
(windows boot cds are really expensive and once you do this all the data you stored on your machine will be lost so be sure to back all that up as far as the mouse i think that theres something inside of it making it do that like a piece may be out of place or something so it may be great to get a new one if you don't want to re install windows
