Top Craziest Laws Still on the Books

Motorists take heed: If you ever find yourself driving at night through rural parts of Pennsylvania , state law requires that you stop every mile to send up a rocket signal. It’s true. And if you see a skittish team of horses coming toward you, be sure to take your car apart, piece by piece, and hide it under the nearest bushes—unless, of course, you want to be in violation of state law.

Seem implausible? Actually, this absurd Pennsylvania law is technically still on the books. In fact, Pennsylvania is not alone. If you look hard enough, each state has its own collection of outdated, silly laws. And while these laws may never be enforced, they are still legally valid because no one has bothered to repeal them. Most of these laws are so old, lawmakers themselves aren’t even aware that many of them exist.

A few of my favorites...

Wyoming - it is illegal for a woman to stand within 5 feet of a bar while drinking

Iowa - a man with a mustache may never kiss a woman in public...luck I was never arrested while I lived there....since it include your wife

Oklahoma - whaling is illegal

Alaska - moose may not be viewed from an airplane and....a moose may not be pushed out of an airplane

AND my favorite is also in Wyoming..."you may not take a bite from another man's hamburger".

I saw this misdemeanor enforced when I worked in Jackson Hole about 10 years ago while eating at Billy's Burger Grill. A great place where they serve giant burgers, fries, cheap beer, sodas and a chicken sandwich. It seats only 23 people and there is always a line to get in. Since Jackson Hole is a summer tourist town the guy "arrested" was one of us locals and released. Ever local understood we were available to be "arrested" as part the summer tourist trade. My son (age 8 at the time) kept offering me a bite of his hamberger in the hopes dad ...you get the picture.

I don't know about state, but I'll tell you a crazy city ordinance that is actually still enforced to this day, in Goreville, IL. All households must possess a firearm. Not kidding, it is actually a law in that town that everyone who lives there must have a firearm in there house, which actually, it's kind of a good law, you would believe how much lower the crime rate is in Goreville IL, as compared to the other little towns surrounding it.
